Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's

Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease are two conditions categorized as inflammatory bowel diseases. Both conditions are extremely similar in that they both involve inflammation of the bowel. It is normally hard to diagnose one condition from the other. As mentioned before both conditions are considered Inflammatory Bowel disease or (IBD). It is reported that there is as many as 2 millions (IBD) sufferers. The condition may be chronic but in some cases may only occur on occasion from particular irritations. Some food allergies or spicy foods may trigger flare ups. Doctors are not completely sure what causes IBD, but there are prescribed medications that can help. 

Crohn's Disease 

Crohn's disease is an inflammation of the intestine. It is most common in the lower section of the small intestine, but has been found to extend throughout all of the digestive tract. Crohn's disease may also be called ileitis or enteritis. Although the exact causes of Crohn's disease have not been clinically proven several experts theorize that bacteria in the intestine may be causing constant inflammation through an over reactive immune response. Rectal bleeding, diarrhea, weight loss and fever are all common symptoms of the disease. 

Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes inflammation and sores, called ulcers, in the lining of the large intestine. The inflammation usually occurs in the rectum and lower part of the colon, but it may affect the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis rarely affects the small intestine except for the end section, called the terminal ileum. Ulcerative colitis may also be called colitis or proctitis.
